As you probably can tell from this blog, I am big a fan of craft and crafting activities. I like to change it up now and then, and recently I’ve been looking into quilting and making them as gifts. Read on to discover what I found out.

You don’t have to do it all by hand

When people think of quilting, they get an image of Grandma, hunched over her sewing, hand fixing tiny squares of fabric together. Of course there is nothing wrong with doing it the old fashioned way. But you will need to cut each shape out, sew it, then sew it altogether. Luckily, it’s also totally possible to use a sewing machine for the job. This will make the process a lot quicker and easier.

However, you will need to make a few adjustment to your machine before you use it to quilt. Use a thicker needle than usual, as this will help it go through all the layers of fabric. It’s also a good idea to change the needle after each quilt you make, so it stays nice and sharp. You will also want to use a feeder foot, rather than a traditional sewing machine foot. This will help the fabric run through the machine smoothly, and prevent bunching of the fabric on the back of your quilt.

You can get some beautiful fabrics

Another thing you need to know about quilting is that it a lot of fun picking the fabric for your quilt. Pick a fat quarter or buy the yard if you find some particularly lovely designs like these from moda fabric.

Did you know that you can get up to 99 squares from a fat quarter if you are using for 2” pieces? You don’t have to buy a whole bolt of the same fabric either; you can get pre-cut bundles of different fabrics to add variety to your quilts. This stops you getting left with a whole load of material you don’t know what to do with.

You can personalise them

One of the best thing about making quilts that I have discovered is all the different ways you can personalize them for the recipient.

Firstly it’s a good idea to choosing their favourite pattern or fabric color. You can match this to their room decor too. Next how about getting each member of the family to sew a square or two on the quilt.  They can add their own designs or embroidery of things that the recipient is interested in. Think cupcakes and princesses for a little girl or spanners and motorbikes for a teenage boy. You can also get fabric photo transfer paper now. So dig out some pictures of the family and print them onto fabric squares and incorporate them into the quilt.  This is perfect if the person you are making it for no longer lives at home or is off to camp for the summer. Then they will always have their family with them! Why not use their camp or college colours too?
